The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has created one of the world’s largest emerging markets, bringing together more than 1.4 billion people and a combined economic opportunity exceeding US$3 trillion.

But one important question remains:

Are East Africa’s ports, logistics networks, customs systems, and legal frameworks ready to support this new era of continental trade?

In my latest article, I explore why the future success of AfCFTA will depend not only on trade agreements, but on our ability to create efficient maritime gateways, integrated transport corridors, digital trade systems, and investor confidence.

As a practitioner in International Trade and Maritime Law, I believe that ports are no longer just places where cargo arrives and departs. They are becoming strategic engines of economic transformation, regional integration, and global competitiveness.

From Tanzania’s maritime potential to East Africa’s role in connecting landlocked economies with global markets, the next chapter of African trade will be written through our ability to move goods faster, smarter, and more efficiently.

The ships are coming. The opportunities are coming. The question is: are we ready?

I invite you to read and share your thoughts on the future of Africa’s maritime and trade landscape.
